What is Brigadeiro?
If there’s one dessert capable of bringing back memories, smiles, and that irresistible urge for “just one more,” that dessert is brigadeiro. Small in size, big in history — and proudly Brazilian.
Brigadeiro is Brazil’s most traditional dessert, holding a very special place in every Brazilian’s heart. Known for its creamy texture and rich chocolate flavor, it’s made with sweetened condensed milk (an ingredient found in manyBrazilian desserts ), cream, and chocolate powder or cocoa. Slowly cooked until it reaches the perfect consistency, the mixture is then rolled into little chocolate balls and coated with chocolate sprinkles — the one and only brigadeiro.

Who came up with the brilliant idea of creating Brigadeiro?
Let’s go back to the 1940s, right after World War II. Brazil was facing a time of scarcity: ingredients were expensive, hard to find, and far from fancy. And that’s exactly when creativity stepped in.
During the presidential campaign of Eduardo Gomes, supporters of the candidate were looking for a simple, affordable way to raise funds. The solution? A dessert that was easy to make, used just a few ingredients, and pleased everyone.
They mixed sweetened condensed milk, chocolate powder, and butter. The result was so irresistible that it became known as “the brigadeiro’s candy.” The name stuck — and so did the recipe.
From political campaign to birthday parties
Even without an election win, brigadeiro won something far more important: the hearts of Brazilians. It left political rallies and found its way into home kitchens, children’s birthday parties, family celebrations, and eventually became a must-have at any special occasion.
More than a dessert, brigadeiro became a tradition. A symbol of affection, childhood, and celebration.

Why is Brigadeiro so special?
Because it’s not just dessert.
It’s a memory.
It’s culture.
It’s a sweet treat that crosses generations and continues to delight people both in Brazil and around the world.
And maybe that’s exactly what makes it so unique:
Brigadeiro is simple — and unforgettable.
